Born and raised in California, Japanese American Frank Sugiyama has grown up believing in the American Dream. After being imprisoned, his world is upended and he is forced to re-evaluate everything that has ever mattered to him.

Within the camp, he meets Mai and the pair strike up an immediate friendship that deepens into something more romantic and complicated as fate, family and war combine to threaten the fragile new life that they have formed.
